Be loving

Love can be overt or it can be subtle. And loving acts can be expressed at some of the most unexpected and delightful times in the most simple ways.

A few years ago our little family took a wonderful trip to Lincoln City, Oregon. I was anxious to get each of the kids out to the beach at just the right time to get the perfect sunset and as little wind as possible. Both kids were ecstatic at the thought of getting their own focused photo session with mom — they didn’t have to share! “Mom, is it my turn yet?” Finally it was Logan’s turn. Just as we were marching to the beach, wouldn’t you know it...the sky went gray, the sun went flat, and the wind started blowing sand into our eyes. I tried to turn him around to the beach house and said “let’s try this another day” but he spotted something on the beach and he made a beeline for it. Of course I had to chase my five year old son who was running toward the ocean; camera in hand, fighting a wind and sand facial.

Just hours earlier, a lovely couple held a simple, romantic wedding ceremony on the same beach. They left behind some beautiful red roses planted in the sand. Logan quickly saved each and every flower from the incoming tide and excitedly returned to me. Then he presented me with a rose and said the sweetest, most loving thing a mom could hear from her son, “will you marry me?” My heart melted, I accepted (of course) and then told him that he is going to make some lucky woman very happy one day.

It’s almost Valentine’s Day, which to me, is a summation of all the tiny loving acts that are exchanged every day. Happy (almost) Valentine’s Day to you and your loves.
